Research Article: A new conceptual design approach for habitative space modules.

In 2013 Sapienza University of Rome, faculty of Engineering, department of Astronautical, Electrical and Energetic Engineering; have designed a concept to improve astronauts’ comfort in the space environment. The article explains the present design of functional space modules and gives a new approach to space design which focuses on the comfort, privacy and orientation for astronauts from a psychological point of view. The concept aims to satisfy human needs for finding isolation, relaxation and silence; where they can spend free time doing personal activities. It analyzes requirements for work, living and rest environments, producing designed compartments for each person containing a work space, bed and wardrobe. Colours are used to represent orientation – brown or grey (earth colours) for the floor, white for the ceiling and neutral, light colours for lateral walls.
